“I condemn the murder of Teodoro Escanilla,” the Director-General said. "I urge the authorities to bring the perpeterators of this attack on freedom of expression to justice.”

Teodoro Escanilla was killed on 19 August in the town of Barcelona, southeast of the Philippines capital, Manila, where he was a reporter for DZMS Radio. He was also spokesperson for the local human rights group Karapatan, and the chair of the local chapter of the Anakpawis political party.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
