“I condemn the murder of Cosme Diez Maestrado,” the Director-General said. “Journalists are paying an unacceptable price for the fundamental right of freedom of expression. I urge the authorities to spare no effort in apprehending those responsible for this crime.”

Cosme Diez Maestrado, who hosted a programme on DXOC radio, was shot by unknown assailants. According to the International Federation of Journalists, Maestrado had survived a previous assassination attempt in November 2013.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
