Director-General urges investigation into killing of Mexican radio station director Abel Manuel Bautista Raymundo

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has condemned the killing of Abel Manuel Bautista Raymundo, owner and director of Radio Espacio 96.1 FM in Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca. She urged the Mexican authorities to investigate this killing.

“I deplore the murder of Abel Manuel Bautista Raymundo,” the Director-General said. “I call on the Mexican authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. Violence and fear of violence must not be allowed to muzzle free speech.”

Abel Manuel Bautista Raymundo was killed as he left work on 14 April.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
