  • Mehriban Aliyeva hosts the UNESCO Regional Literacy Conference - HRH Princess Firyal and HE Mrs Vigdís Finnbogadóttir chair panels

    18-05-2008 4:00 pm Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady of Azerbaijan, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, hosted the fifth in the series of the UNESCO Regional Conferences in Support of Global Literacy from 14 to 16 May 2008 in Baku, Azerbaijan.UNESCO Literacy Conference in Baku.jpg

    The Conference, which was opened by the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, brought together high-level decision makers and experts from 31 countries and the international community.

    The participants, also including UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors Her Royal Highness Princess Firyal and Her Excellency Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, addressed the literacy and adult education challenges specific to Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

    The Conference presented roundtables to stimulate discussions on main challenges, trends, gaps, achievements and innovations in the region, as well as to develop recommendations on how to promote literacy.

    HRH Princess Firyal chaired the panel "Family Literacy and Intergenerational Learning" and HE Mrs Vigdís Finnbogadóttir presided over the panel entitled "Literacy and Education for Sustainable Development".
