Taytu Betul

Taytu Betul (c.1851–1918), wife of Menelik, was a formidable queen and empress of Ethiopia. She used her exceptional intelligence to strengthen and extend her power through an adroit blend of patronage, political marriages and leadership craft. Determined to resist imperialist designs on her country, she increasingly opposed any negotiations that would result in the loss of Ethiopian territory. When diplomacy gave way to war, she rode out at the head of her own army, at her husband’s side.

The Mulatto Solitude

Born around 1780, the mulatto Solitude was a historical figure of the 1802 uprisings against the reinstatement of Lacrosse, who had been appointed Captain-General of Guadeloupe by Napoleon Bonaparte and expelled in October 1801 following a coup by the army’s officers of colour. A female figure of insurgents in Guadeloupe in 1802, the mulatto Solitude symbolizes the  Caribbean women and mothers who fought to protect the ideals of equality and freedom in the context of slavery.

The Police blogosphere in Brazil: from shooting to twitter

This publication is the first in-depth study about the most recent and relevant trend in journalistic reporting on police, criminality and security policies. The collection of information and the blogs’ analysis were done through an Internet survey answered by 73 police bloggers, authors of 70 blogs, between May and June 2009.

This study, written by international experts, Toby Mendel and Eve Salomon, is an investigation of the current regulatory situation of the Brazilian media system in comparison with current practices in ten other democracies (Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Jamaica, Malaysia, South Africa, Thailand, United Kingdom and United States of America) and with recommendations of international law.

The Women Soldiers of Dahomey

This comic strip tells the story of elite troops of women soldiers, which were probably established in the early eighteenth century and contributed to the military power of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These fearsome women soldiers surpassed their male counterparts in courage and effectiveness in combat, and distinguished themselves on many occasions in the history of the Kingdom of Dahomey.

Towards a common UN system approach: Harnessing communication to achieve the Millennium Development Goals

This document was prepared as a background paper for the 10th UN Inter-Agency Round Table on Communication for Development, which is to be held in Addis Ababa from 12 to 14 February 2007, in line with the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/51/172 of December 1996. This publication provides an overview of the issues that were covered during the Round Table, as well as suggestions as to how inter-agency coordination can be improved, both at headquarters and at country level.

Towards Knowledge Societies for Peace and Sustainable Development: First WSIS+10 Review Event

The event Towards Knowledge Societies for Peace and Sustainable Development, hosted by UNESCO and co-organized with ITU, UNDP and UNCTAD in February 2013, marks a significant step in the WSIS+10 Review process. Some 1450 participants reviewed the progress towards Information and Knowledge Societies that has been achieved since WSIS, considered ways of addressing challenges in access and use of ICTs for development, and built new partnerships to ensure that present and future generations benefit fully from the potential of new technologies.
