World Press Freedom Day
Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
World Press Freedom Prize 2014
An international, independent jury of media professionals has named Turkish investigative journalist Ahmet Şik the winner of the 2014 UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. The award ceremony took place at UNESCO’s Paris Headquarters on Friday, 2 May 2014. The international conference organized on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day opened at UNESCO Headquarters Monday 5 May 2014. Subjects examined during the event included the safety of journalists, the fight against impunity, the growing importance of new forms of journalism and the need to include press freedom among the next United Nations international development goals.

The cartoons reproduced here were illustrated by Tunisian cartoonist, Belkhamsa Chedly in conjunction with the World Press Freedom Day Celebration in Tunis, Tunisia from 3-5 May 2012. The cartoons were drawn during the conference itself.
