Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned |
"Not only is education a pillar of democracy, but democracy is also a pillar of education." Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned, Consort of the Emir of the State of Qatar, was named UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education to pay tribute to her outstanding commitment to the promotion of education in Qatar.
As Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned has spearheaded activities and projects in basic and higher education, establishing several high quality, non-profit private schools and learning institutions for children and young people in Qatar.
As a UNESCO Special Envoy, Her Highness’s main mission will be to promote education for all children and the improvement of the quality of education throughout the world. Her Highness played for instance an active role in setting up the Fund for Higher Education in Iraq. She considers it as her personal mission to assist Iraq, which was once a proud nation with rich education resources, through this difficult period until it can once again stand on its own as a leader in educational reform and innovation.

Her Highness Sheikha Mozah of Qatar delivers the closing speech for an international conference on the education in Iraq.
On the 1st November 2008, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Misned, First Lady of Qatar, UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education and Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, joined Mr Koichiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO in closing the international Conference on the Right to Education in Crisis-Affected Countries, entitled ‘Stop Jeopardizing the Future of Iraq’. The conference attracted more than 200 participants and was held under the high auspices of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah. It took place in UNESCO headquarters in Paris and was enriched by the presence of many notable personalities such as former United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Boutros Boutros Ghali, the President of the Parliamentary Education Committee of Iraq, Dr Alaa Makki, the Minister of Education of Iraq, Dr Khudair Al-Khuza and Member of European Parliament and Chair of the AMAR International Charitable Foundation, Baroness Emma Nicholson de Winterbourne. HH Sheikha Mozah hosts Regional Mid-Term Review Meeting on Education for All
What needs to be done to ensure that the countries of the Arab region achieve the six Education for All (EFA) goals by 2015? This was the main question addressed by Arab Ministers of Education at the Mid-Term Review Meeting on Education for All, which was held in Doha, Qatar, from 19-21 February 2008. From 12 to 14 March 2007 Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education and Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation, and Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, hosted the Regional Conference on Literacy Challenges in the Arab Region in Doha, Qatar. Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady of Azerbaijan and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, addressed the opening ceremony. Qatar donates 15 million dollars for the creation of the International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq
