Education for Sustainable Development

© UNESCO Santiago

Sustainable development seeks to meet our current needs without compromising the needs of generations yet to come; to find a way of solving today’s social and environmental problems, and learning to live sustainably.

The aim of education for sustainable development (ESD) is to help people to develop attitudes and skills, and to acquire knowledge that allows them to make decisions based on benefit to themselves and others, now and in the future, and to put these decisions into practice. We must look towards a future in which environmental, social, and economic decisions are in balance, in the quest for development and a good quality of life.

OREALC/UNESCO Santiago works in coordination with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, providing guidance and support for ESD policies, programmes, and projects. Its goal is for the sustainable development paradigm to be included in education policies and curriculum proposals. These actions span governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in a vast range of areas.
