UNESCO education authorities to visit Cuba

On an invitation by Cuba’s Ministry of Higher Education, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education Qian Tang is to make a presentation on “The University and Sustainable Development” on 16 February, at the Congreso Universidad 2012 event.

Qian Tang will also hold meetings with the Ministers of Education and of Higher Education, and shall visit UNESCO associated schools in the country as well as the Universidad de La Habana.

Mr. Qian Tang has worked for UNESCO since 1993, holding a number of positions in the Education area. In 2010 UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova appointed him as Assistant Director-General for Education. This shall be his first visit to Cuba.

This higher education congress will also be attended by the Director of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC), Pedro Henríquez. While in Cuba, he will give a presentation at the National Workshop of UNESCO Chairs, to be held as part of Universidad 2012 on 14 February, as well as visiting education centres and holding meetings with the Cuban National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO and the UNESCO Regional Bureau of Culture for Latin America and the Caribbean (ORCALC).

Mr. Henríquez, was formerly Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration at the Universidad Central de Chile. He has also served as Director of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) for Chile, as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) for MERCOSUR Education, and for the Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean.
