15-09-2004 (Paris) First Southern African Gender and Media Summit Concluded in South Africa
The first Southern African Gender and Media Summit (GEM) closed yesterday in Johannesburg. The three-day event brought together over 180 media practitioners, trainers, researchers, media regulatory authorities, NGOs and activists from sub-Saharan Africa who exchanged experiences around gender and media initiatives within individual countries and across the region.

Fifteen young television producers representing seven countries in Southern Africa embarked on a pilot networking and television programme exchange project yesterday in Johannesburg, in South Africa. The project, entitled You, Me and HIV/AIDS intends to increase young people’s involvement in producing high quality television productions that reflect the challenge and the positive spirit of people affected by HIV/AIDS.

Improved data transfer and a wide-range of computer applications in Nepali language are the main results of a UNESCO supported project to normalize Nepali “Devanagari” as the standard font for local language computing that was implemented by “Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya”, a non-governmental organization based in Lalitpur, in Nepal.

The 9th UN Communication Round Table announced the outcome of three days of deliberation on the overall theme Communication for Sustainable Development in Rome this week. The list of recommendations is long but includes the need for pluralistic media, more data and analysis to support communication for development initiatives, and scaling up of successful efforts.

The development of video programmes with Samoan local content and their dissemination via the Internet is the focus of a project supported by UNESCO's Information for All Programme (IFAP). An agreement that was been recently signed by UNESCO and the Samoa National Commission for UNESCO foresee the completion of the project within one year.

Member States and regional and international NGOs are invited to submit names of candidates for the 2005 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. The Prize, created in 1997, each year honours a person, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom. Nominations must reach UNESCO by 29 October 2004.
