World Radio Day 2013 around the World in photos

13 February is World Radio Day — a day to celebrate radio as a medium; to improve international cooperation between broadcasters; and to encourage major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information and freedom of expression over the airwaves. UNESCO Headquarters - Paris

On 13 February 2013, UNESCO celebrated World Radio Day in Paris by welcoming seven international radio stations to broadcast live from its Headquarters and holding a series of public debates with experts.

BBC, China Radio International, Radio Exterior de España (REE), Radio France Internationale (RFI), Monte Carlo Doualiya Radio, Radio Orient, Voice of Russia transmitted programmes from UNESCO’s Open Hall, thus reaching audiences of tens of millions of people.

Debates treated a wide range of topics including youth radio, shortwave broadcasting, the safety of journalists and Albert Turpain’s role in radio. Experts included Emmanuel Semo, President of Radio VL “First Young Media of France”; Clémence Petit-Perrot of Children's Radio Foundation; Jean-Paul Marthoz from the Committee to Protect Journalists; radio journalist Rania Badri; Biniam Simon, founder of Radio Erena; Catherine Westcott, Senior Frequency Manager of the BBC, Josef Troxler, Steering Board Member of Digital Radio Mondiale; Oleg Kupriyanov, Deputy Chairman of Voice of Russia; Jacques Marzac, French historian; as well as Mirta Lourenço, Sylvie Coudray and Guy Berger from UNESCO.

Havana

Cuban radio was the main topic of conversation during UNESCO World Radio Day celebrations held at the Casa Museo Carmen Montilla, in the historic center of Old Havana.

Participants to the event included , Isabel Viera, Program Officer for Communication and Information of UNESCO’s Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean; Josefa Bracero, a prominent broadcaster and historian of radio and television in Cuba, Ana Teresa Badia and Sandra Paul, journalists from Radio Rebelde and professors of the School of Communication at the University of Havana, and Magda Resik, Director of Communications at the Office of the City Historian of Havana, who also acted as moderator of the dialogue.

A concert held on the weekend of 10 February at the Karl Marx theater by Buena Fe, one of the most popular musical groups in Cuba, also served as the preamble to the World Radio Day. Buena Fe’s latest album pays tribute to Cuban radio in the 90s, demonstrating the importance of radio to more than 15,000 spectators in attendance.

London

Hosted by SOAS Radio and the Centre of African Studies at SOAS , University of London and supported by UNESCO, the event included keynote speeches by Tim Williams, Non-Executive Director and Deputy Director of the UK National Commission for UNESCO, Bettina Peters, Director of Development at the Thomson Foundation and Dr. Mary Myers, a specialist on community radio in Africa. The session was chaired by Dr Seraphin Kamdem, Department of the Languages and Cultures of Africa at SOAS. The event also featured a Communication for Development trade fair and a six-hour “Radio Marathon” hosted by SOAS Radio.

In the evening, a group listening session held by 'In The Dark' explored stories that touch the heart of human development - all told through sound. The ‘In the Dark’ team is an international group of radio enthusiasts who celebrate the power of radio through group listening events.

UNESCO World Radio Day partner, the Children’s Radio Foundation (CRF) hosted a photo exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London and launched a 24 hour pop up radio station. Live guests during the event included BBC representatives Robin Lustig, Hardeep Singh Kohli, Ed Stourton, Charlie Lee-Potter, and Ivor Gaber, UK representative to the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication and the UK National Commission for UNESCO.

Madrid

On 13 February 2013 UNESCO received an official plaque from the Spanish Radio Academy for having proclaimed World Radio Day in 2011, delivered during a gala event held in Madrid, Spain, in which UNESCO was represented by Janis Karklins, Assistant Director-General.

An official plaque was also given to ITU, represented by Fabio Leite, and to Federico Mayor Zaragoza, former UNESCO Director-General. Awards were given in ten categories to Spanish radio professionals.

Maseru

In cooperation with the UNESCO Windhoek Cluster Office, the Lesotho National Commission for UNESCO organized two World Radio Day activities. On 12 February, the Commission held a national forum on the “Evolution of radio in Lesotho and its contribution to development” with participants from various NGO’s and from all 12 radio stations in the country.

On the 13 February 2013, Mafeteng Community Radio (MCR) hosted an event to raise awareness about the importance of radio in Lesotho. Activities included a march; speeches from stakeholders including the Minister of Communications and a two-hour phone in radio programme to discuss the importance of community participation in radio.

Nairobi

From 13-14 February 2013, UNESCO’s Regional Office for Eastern Africa joined various UN agencies, national media stakeholders and community media outlets to celebrate World Radio Day during the National Forum of Community of Radios in Mtito Andei, Kenya.

The 2-day celebration was a platform for communication among local communities to address issues related to community media. Participants highlighted the role of community radio in addressing social, economic and political issues that affect the very fabric of society. More information on the forum.

New York

As part of its World Radio Day celebrations, UNESCO and the United Nations Department of Public Information held a panel discussion entitled "The Enduring Power of Radio in the 21st Century – UN Panel discussion on World Radio Day, 13 February 2013." Speakers included Philippe Kridelka, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office in New York; Francisco Javier Sanabria, Minister Counselor for the Permanent Mission of Spain to the United Nations; and the Director of the UN News and Media Division.

Windhoek

UNESCO Windhoek Office Celebrated World Radio Day with five activities in Namibia under the theme “Radio in our everyday lives”.

The activities included (i) Special programming in all 19 participating radio stations,(ii) A three-day capacity building workshop for 30 local radio station personnel focusing on ICTs and sustainability, (iii) A radio parade in Windhoek to raise the visibility of the day (iv) A four-hour outside broadcasting event for the radio stations in Namibia and (v) Open houses at Namibia radio stations for school children and journalism/communication students.

These activities were organized in collaboration and partnership with other UN agencies in Namibia, the Ministry of ICTs and with the participation of 19 radio stations. The events were made possible through the sponsorship and support from Deutsche Welle- Akademie (Berlin), The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia(CRAN), TELECOM Namibia, Coca Cola Namibia, The Namibia Broadcasting Corporation, Trans Namib among others.
