Thanks to the generous support of the Federal Government of Austria (Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture; Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs; Austrian Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth), the new UNESCO Venice Office 15’ video on sensitization and awareness-raising on the fight against the illicit traffic of cultural property is now available in 9 languages of South-East European countries. Realized in close cooperation with Ministries of Culture and National Commissions of South-East Europe, the video is now directly available and accessible on Venice YouTube channel in Albanian, Bulgarian, Bosnian, Croatian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Romanian, Serbian and Slovenian languages.

The video puts the emphasis on issues specific to the region (such as the fight against looting of religious heritage, the need for training, capacity-building, and sharing of information mechanisms); shows images of famous and valuable stolen and recuperated objects; promotes the value of all types of movable cultural properties; and, increases awareness of the wider public on the importance of their contribution to the appropriate management and protection of their cultural heritage. The video also features interviews by Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO; Karl-Heinz Kind, Coordinator, Works of Art Unit, INTERPOL; Elena Korka, Director for the Documentation and Protection of Cultural Goods, Ministry of Culture, Greece; Colonnello Raffaele Mancino, Division for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, Comando dei Carabinieri-Tutela Patrimonio Culturale, Italy; Bianka Perčinić-Kavur, Chief of Department for Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, Croatia; Despo Pilides, Curator of Antiquities, Ministry of Communications and Works, Cyprus.

This video was produced for the general public to show the different dimensions of illicit traffic in South-East Europe, promote regional and international cooperation, and mobilize public opinion.

This video complements a wide range of communication and awareness-raising tools realized by UNESCO (videos, clips, educational kits, exhibitions, publications, etc). An international meeting of experts on awareness raising measures has been organised by the UNESCO Venice Office in Skopje, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, on 13 October 2011, and in Tirana, Albania, on 23 November 2011.
