The programmes of UNESCO Communication and Information Sector (CI) are rooted in the Organization’s Constitution, which requires the Organization to promote the “free flow of ideas by word and image.”

The Communication and Information programme has three principal strategic objectives:

  1. Promoting the free flow of ideas and universal access to information
  2. Promoting the expression of pluralism and cultural diversity in the media and world information networks
  3. Promoting access for all to Information Communication Technologies (ICTs)

UNESCO believes in equal opportunities for all to acquire necessary skills to understand, participate and benefit from the emerging opportunities created by a global exchange of information. Promoting a more solidarity-based society and empowering people through the free flow of ideas by word and image, and by facilitating access to information and knowledge is the primary aim of CI sector of UNESCO.

UNESCO in Viet Nam mainly focuses on providing people with the skills and abilities for critical reception, assessment and use of information in their professional and personal lives. UNESCO also concentrates on providing training and lifelong learning experience for media and information specialists in Viet Nam.
