Director General of UNESCO visits Latin America and the Caribbean
During January and February, Koichiro Matsuura was received by the presidents of Argentina and Chile. In Chile, Matsuura visited national authorities, UNESCO’s Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean based in Santiago, and viewed the ongoing restoration of the Easter Island moais, carried out by UNESCO with Japanese funds. In Argentina, the Director General signed an agreement to establish the International Centre for Human Rights in Buenos Aires, whose mission will include the fostering and promotion of education to preserve historical memory.
In the Caribbean, Matsuura visited an area in Grenada that is a candidate for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the Grand Bay and Archaeological Museum of Carriacou island. In Antigua and Barbuda he emphasized the importance of UNESCO’s support to this nation, especially in the development of statistical capabilities and use of ICTs in education. In Cuba, the Director General congratulated the country for its achievements in this same field.
