Niue

Niue joined UNESCO on 26 October 1993. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Apia, Samoa.

Niue is a tropical island in the Pacific Ocean, east of the Tonga Islands. It is one of the largest coral islands in the world. Food crops (taro, yams, manioc, bananas) and coconut palm plantations are found mainly on the coast. A beekeeping industry has developed and honey has become an important export. The 3,200 hectares of dense forest in the island’s interior supply a small-scale timber industry. Tourism has been developing since 1975.

Niue is participating in UNESCO’s Pacific Islands Global Ocean Observing System, a monitoring network aimed at improving management of marine resources.
The country has two schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
