Fiji joined UNESCO on 14 July 1983. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Apia, Samoa.

Supported by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), the radio station fem’TALK 89.2 FM is the first mobile community radio project run by women. Installed in Navua and Latuoka in Fiji, it broadcasts “suitcase radio” local stories dealing with social issues.

In 2006 and 2007, young people aged between 24-28 years, representing government, NGOs and the University of the South Pacific, were trained as film documentary producers. They made short documentaries addressing HIV/AIDS issues in Fiji, as part of UNESCO’s programme "Young TV Producers Global Network on HIV and AIDS".

The "Pacific Sub regional Training Workshop on Information and Communication Technology for Disabled Persons Organizations" was organized in Fiji in June 2006 by UNESCO and the Fiji Disabled Peoples Association (FDPA).

Fiji is active in ocean conservation, and participates in several projects with UNESCO’s Natural Sciences sector.
