Slovenia joined UNESCO on 27 May 1992.

The Škocjan Caves system comprises some 6 km of galleries more than 200 m deep, many waterfalls and one of the largest known underground chambers. The site, located in the Kras (i.e. Karst) region, is one of the most famous in the world for the study of karstic phenomena. UNESCO decided to place the site on the World Heritage List in 1986.

UNESCO supports the multicultural radio station network coordinated by Radio Student in Slovenia, made up of nine radio stations in five countries of the Western Balkans and one in Switzerland. The project aims to encourage cultural dialogue, media plurality and freedom of expression.

In March 2006, the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO hosted the Euro-Arab Dialogue of Civilizations Seminar of pedagogical Institutes and Centers of Europe and Arab regions.
