Cape Verde joined UNESCO on February 15, 1978. The country is covered by the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Africa, in Dakar (Senegal).

UNESCO and Cape Verde work together on capacity-building in education. The country participates in UNESCO's Teacher Training Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA), aimed at restructuring national teacher policies.

Another area of cooperation is regional integration. With UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations (MOST) programme, the country organized a seminar on the topic in 2007.

Cape Verde participates in the “One UN” pilot initiative, testing more coordinated delivery by United Nations agencies, including UNESCO.

A State Party to the World Heritage Convention, Cape Verde is also concerned with sustainable development of cultural tourism.
