Uganda joined UNESCO on 9 November 1962 and is covered by the UNESCO Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Uganda takes part in a number of national and regional projects to improve the quality of education. It also plays a leading role in the Programme on Guidance, Counselling and Youth Development for Africa.

In the natural sciences domain, Uganda is implementing the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) in East Africa. It is also taking part in the Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP), the first concerted approach to face a major extinction crisis.

The World Heritage List includes three Ugandan sites: the Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Uganda’s Barkcloth Making is listed as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The country is a member of UNESCO’s Executive Board (until 2009).
