Lebanon, a founding member, joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946.

The UNESCO Office Beirut, a regional office for education in the Arab states, opened in 1961. It also acts as a cluster office for Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and the Autonomous Palestinian Territories.

Lebanon and UNESCO signed two cultural agreements in August 2007. The first project "Capacity building of Human Resources for Digital Documentation of World Heritage Sites" aims to develop tangible cultural heritage. The second, “Cultural reconciliation for Lebanese youth” aims at creating networks of solidarity.

Beirut has been named World Book Capital 2009, notably for its dynamic programme for promoting books and emphasizing cultural diversity and dialogue.

Lebanon is an active member of UNESCO’s Plan Arabia promoting Arab culture and cultural dialogue.

Lebanon acquired a second biosphere reserve in 2007, Jahab Al Rihane. Its Shouf biosphere reserve joined the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in 2005. Lebanon presides the ArabMAB network.

Inscriptions in the Phoenician alphabet, prototype for all alphabets and Lebanon’s most significant contribution to the world, were listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2005.
