Costa Rica joined UNESCO on May 19, 1950. It hosts the UNESCO Cluster Office for Central America, covering El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The San José Office provides assistance in all areas of UNESCO expertise, particularly education.

The Education for All Global Monitoring Report for 2005 showed that 95.8 percent of Costa Rican adults are literate.

As of September 2006, Costa Rica has 185 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).

At the heart of one of the most active volcanic regions on Earth, Costa Rica is participating in the study of seismic microzoning of Latin American cities, as well as Regional Action Programme Central America (RAP-CA) related to natural disaster reduction.

The country has three sites on the World Heritage List, and "Oxherding and Oxcart Traditions in Costa Rica" was proclaimed a Masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage in 2005.
