Peru has been a member of UNESCO since 1946.

Peru signed the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1982. There are currently 10 national sites listed – six cultural, two natural and two mixed. Foremost are the Historical Sanctuary of Macchu Pichu and the City of Cuzco, both included in 1983.

A joint project with the Government of Peru and UNESCO’s Natural Sciences sector, using space technologies and in particular remote sensing, is underway in Machu Picchu and its valley to better conserve the site in both its cultural and natural heritage values.

In 1966, the Peruvian government and UNESCO embarked on a programme to reduce the impact of earthquakes in the Andean region, signing a bilateral accord that created the Regional Centre for Seismology for South America (CERESIS).

Peru and UNESCO decided in 2006 to create a Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Latin America (CRESPIAL) in Cuzco, Peru, to assist Member States of the region in safeguarding actions.
