Norway joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946.

Norway is a major contributor to UNESCO-led programmes, particularly in education. It has established close and fruitful ties with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in adult education and lifelong learning. In addition, it promotes literacy programmes and non-formal education and helps fund research, training through research, and the creation of networks and publications in developing countries.

The Nordic Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2003 between UNESCO and Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden created a new framework for these countries to provide support for Education for All capacity-building efforts.

Several Norwegian natural and cultural sites are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The spectacularly scenic Western Norwegian fjords of Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord were added in 2005.

In addition, three items representing Norway’s documentary heritage are on the Memory of the World Register: the Leprosy Archives of Bergen, Henrik Ibsen's “A Doll’s House”, and Roald Amundsen's South Pole Expedition.
