Burkina Faso joined UNESCO on November 14, 1960. The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office in Bamako, Mali.

UNESCO and Burkina Faso are working together to boost capacities of the Kougoudou Ecole Normale Supérieur, which trains secondary level teachers.

The country’s International Centre for Girls’ and Women’s Education in Africa (CIEFFA) became operational as a UNESCO centre in 2006.

Burkina Faso is pursuing projects linked to cultural preservation and exchange. In 2007, it was elected to the intergovernmental committee of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
