Burundi joined UNESCO on November 16, 1962. It is covered by the UNESCO Office Bujumbura. The country has a UNESCO Chair for Education for Peace and Conflict Resolution and two UNESCO-UNEVOC centres for technical and vocational education and training.

Burundi also participates in UNESCO's Teacher Training Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA), a 10-year project aimed at restructuring national teacher policies in 46 sub-Saharan countries.
