Congo

The Republic of Congo joined UNESCO on 24 October 1960 and hosts a UNESCO Office in its capital city, Brazzaville.

The country has benefited from UNESCO’s support in its post-conflict reconstruction. Efforts are particularly focused on the national plan to achieve Education for All. Congo participates in Teacher Training Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA), aimed at restructuring national policies. Another UNESCO project provides training for science teachers.

The Republic of Congo is addressing environmental issues in central Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. Among other activities, it takes part in the Central Africa World Heritage Forest Initiative.

In September 2007, the Republic of Congo hosted a regional conference on UNESCO’s Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

UNESCO helps organize the Panafrican Festival of Music (FESPAM), held in Brazzaville every two years.
