UNESCO supports media professionals to engage social peace
11-05-2007 (Kinshasa)
Media professionals and delegates of the Congolese Media Observatory (OMEC) from 7 provinces recently stressed the importance to avoid all issues that could compromise social peace and to promote good governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The declaration was made after workshops organised by OMEC from 3 to 5 April 2007 on the theme “Media for peace consolidation, democracy and good governance”, with UNESCO's support.
Initially planned to be a preventive action aiming to avoid the amplification of the ethical drifts of the media during the elections, the workshops turned out as a curative action following the tragic events that occurred last month.
The adopted texts (Declaration of Kinshasa and recommendations) reflect the debates between 75 participants of the workshops including the journalists from 7 provinces and delegates of different national socio-political institutions.
In the Declaration of Kinshasa, the participants have stipulated the importance to respect the professional duties and rules and to promote the emergence of the democratic and pluralistic society.
The UNESCO representative in the Democratic Republic of Congo congratulated OMEC for the success of the workshops and emphasized 3 guiding concepts for the development of the media: responsibility, conscience and vision.
