      Biosphere Reserve Information

Dem.Republic of the Congo

LUFIRA

General Description   This biosphere reserve is located in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the first miombo woodland which was designated as a biosphere reserve. Miombo woodland is the dominant vegetation type of the Central African plateau and comprises ecosystems in the seasonal tropics dominated for example by the tree genus Brachystegia laurentii.
The biosphere reserve also includes grasslands on the periodically flooded lowlands and steppe-like vegetation on the top of the plateau. There is a dense and mature river system, marshlands and papyrus beds. The species diversity is extraordinary high.
About 14,700 people live within the biosphere reserve (1998). The site is currently undergoing a serious degradation due to timber exploitation, agricultural and fishing activities even in the core area.
Major ecosystem type   Tropical dry or deciduous forest (incl. monsoon forests)
Major habitats & land cover types   Open "miombo" forests dominated by Cassia singueana, Psorospermum febrifugum and Afzelia quanzensis; dense humid forest ("muhulu"); woody savanna; gallery forests characterized by Khaya nyasica, Chlorophora excelsa and Parkia sp.; aquatic grasslands with Leersia spp., Oryza spp., and reedbeds (Typha spp. and Phragmites spp.); agroecosystems; pasture land; residential areas
