Djibouti joined UNESCO on 31 August 1989. The country is covered by the Organization's Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The country gives particular importance to promoting its rich cultural diversity. Djibouti was one of the first states to ratify the Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
Its parliament has approved the ratification of UNESCO’s conventions on safeguarding natural and cultural heritage, including intangible heritage.
In this context, Djibouti is preparing to submit Lake Assal for inclusion on the World Heritage Tentative List.
UNESCO also supports the organization of the music festival “Fest’Horn”. It represents a major opportunity for cultural promotion and dialogue in the region.
