Madagascar

Madagascar joined UNESCO on 10 November 1960 and is covered by the UNESCO Office in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).

UNESCO and Madagascar are working together on the country’s Education for All programme. Literacy and non-formal education are emphasized. Madagascar participates in the Teacher Training Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA).

The country is also working closely with UNESCO to preserve its natural and cultural heritage. Madagascar has three sites listed on the World Heritage List. The Rainforests of the Atsinanana, rich in biodiversity, were the latest addition in 2007.

The Woodcrafting Knowledge of the Zafimaniry community was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. In 2007, national officials attended a workshop in Antananarivo on inventorying Madagascar’s intangible heritage.
