Malawi/UNESCO cooperation focuses mainly on natural, cultural and intangible heritage.
Malawi has one cultural site and one natural site inscribed on the World Heritage List. Moreover it is actively preparing an enhanced Tentative List.
The Gule Wamkulu, a ritual dance also practised in Mozambique and Zambia, and the Vimbuza Healing Dance, were proclaimed Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005. For each of these practices, an action plan has been elaborated in order to ensure their safeguarding and transmission.
In the framework of the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity, Malawi participates in awareness-raising and training activities to prevent piracy in the area of cultural industries.
