Two Mauritanian sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List, one natural and one cultural.

The country's abundant cultural heritage, which deserves to be protected and promoted, includes towns with traditional architecture and ancient manuscripts that record the history of Islamic thought. The natural site of Banc d’Arguin has a training programme for its personnel and has been the subject of several studies. The projects arising out of the cooperation between Mauritania and UNESCO have a social dimension and should be viewed in the light of the struggle against poverty.
Mauritania has established an innovative system of Living Human Treasures aimed at promoting the bearers of intangible heritage and encouraging the transmission of their know-how.
