LegislationThe legal text of the National Commission - "Funcions and Organisation of the Seychelles National Commission for UNESCO" - (1977) defines the organization and operational capacities of the National Commission (sent to ERC/NCP in 1999).
Documentation CentreA section of the National Library is the depository for about 5000 UNESCO publications. Other documentation centres hold UNESCO publications on their specialities.
Structure of the CommissionThe National Commission has a General Assembly and a small Secretariat.
Members/CompositionThe National Commission is composed of 8 members
General AssemblyComposed of 8 members, representing the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Community Development, Culture Youth and Sports, the Ministry of National Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NGOs, the Information and Public Relations and the Management of the Seychelles UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Commissioners are appointed for a period of four years. The General Assembly meets at least twice a year.
Committees or Sub-CommitteesThe Commission may form sub-committees or working groups to work on specific matters. Members represent ministries responsible for education, culture, science, communication, and foreign affairs; representatives from other agencies (including non-governmental ones) working in the areas of UNESCO's competence; and individuals in their personal capacity. Representatives from other Government ministries responsible for areas of interest to the programme of UNESCO may also be appointed.
Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
OverviewClose co-operation with the National Commissions of Comores, Magadascar,Mauritius and Tanzania. There has been collaboration, especially in training, with some other National Commissions of the Africa region. Communication and collaboration with the Dar-es-Salaam Office, the Regional Bureau for Science (Nairobi) and the Regional Bureau for Education (Dakar) has greatly improved in recent years.
