Tunisia joined UNESCO on November 8, 1956. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Rabat, in Morocco, a cluster office which also represents the Organization in Algeria, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, and Morocco.

Several UNESCO Chairs have been established in Tunisia including one on the condition of women. From 16 to 18 November 2005, Tunisia hosted the second phrase of the World Summit on the Information Society.
