Jordan

Jordan joined UNESCO on 14 June 1950. It is covered by the UNESCO Office Amman. The office also temporarily houses the UNESCO Office for Iraq.

The creation of the International Centre for Synchrotron Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) in 2004 marked a major step in Jordan’s cooperation with the Organization. Once operational (2010), SESAME will focus on structural molecular biology, atomic and molecular sciences, surface and interface science, environmental science, material science and archaeological science.

Jordan plays an active role in the Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet), with over 80 associated schools in the country. Jordan also has five UNESCO Chairs.

HRH Princess Firyal, a member of the Jordanian royal family, was named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1992. Her Hope Foundation, created in collaboration with UNESCO, supports education projects for street and working children.

Petra, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture, is one of three Jordanian sites listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Half-built, half-carved into the rock, surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges, it counts among the world's most famous archaeological sites.
