The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office Doha, in Qatar.

Oman finances the Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation. Awarded biennially, it honours individuals, institutions and organizations striving to preserve the environment.

Because lack of freshwater is a serious challenge to the country, Oman is one of many Middle Eastern countries that is active in researching desalination of sea water as a means of obtaining a more even supply of freshwater resources.
