LegislationThe Constitution of the Indian Commission was approved in 1951 and was modified in 1981 and in 1988.
Documentation CentreThe Documentation Centre of the Commission holds 10 000 UNESCO publications and 8500 titles issued by Ministries or national institutions. The Centre welcomes some 3000 visitors each year, including Government officials, researchers, students, journalists and the general public at large.
Structure of the CommissionThe National Commission meets in Plenary at least once every two years. It consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly, which meets at least once every two years;
- Five Sub-Commissions
- The Secretariat.
Members/CompositionThe National Commission is composed of 50 institutional and 50 individual members representing governmental departments, Ministries and institutions specialized in the fields of UNESCO’s competence, as well as representatives of NGO’s, parliamentarians and prominent personalities from the scientific, cultural, education and communication circles.
Committees or Sub-CommitteesFive Sub-Commissions : (1) Education; (2) Communications; (3) Culture; (4) Natural Sciences; and (5) Social Sciences. Each Sub-Commission, comprises 20 members, and meets when required.

Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
OverviewThe National Commission collaborates with its counterparts of Asia and the Pacific (in particular: Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea and Sri Lanka). The Indian National Commission also maintains sound working relations with the UNESCO Field Offices of New Delhi and Bangkok, which provide it with technical support so to carry out programme and activities on mutual basis.
