Micronesia (Federated States of)

Micronesia joined UNESCO on October 19, 1999 and is covered by the Organization's office in Apia (Samoa).

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) spend more than 6% of their GDP on education. This achievement was hailed by UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura when he visited the FSM in August 2005.

The Utwe Biosphere Reserve in the state of Kosrae joined the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) network in 2005. The first in Micronesia and one of the first in the Pacific, the Biosphere Reserve is characterized by a high biodiversity, with tropical rain forests, mangrove forest, sea grass beds and coral reefs.

In 2005, the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) approved the project "Modern Radio Management and Broadcasting for the Federated States of Micronesia". It aims to strengthen the skills of public radio programming professionals.

The country participates in the Pacific Islands Global Ocean Observing System.
