Myanmar

Myanmar joined UNESCO on June 27, 1949. The country is covered by the Organization’s Bangkok Office, in Thailand.

With more than 2800 monuments, the oldest dating from the 10th century, concentrated on a single site, Bagan represents the outstanding achievement of an innovative Buddhist school of art and is one of the major historical landmarks of Asia. Parts of the site were damaged by a 1975 earthquake and three successive UNESCO projects were carried out in cooperation with the country, for institutional building, some experimental conservation work and restoration of selected mural paintings.

Among scientific projects, Myanmar is involved in UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission’s Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System programme.
