Nauru

Nauru joined UNESCO on 17 October 1996. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Apia, Samoa.

Located south of the equator in the Pacific Ocean, Nauru is a relatively isolated island north of the Solomon Islands, about 2,000 kilometres from Papua New Guinea. Nauru has phosphate deposits, found in pockets of a raised coralline limestone plateau which forms the skeleton of the island.

Nauru has one UNEVOC centre for vocational training, and several schools linked to UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network.

The country takes part in UNESCO’s Pacific Islands Global Ocean Observing System, which promotes use of research data for sustainable management of ocean resources.
