In the framework of the Pacific 2009 Programme, Papua New Guinea received technical assistance for the implementation of Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and the elaboration of a Tentative List of sites to be proposed for inscription on the World Heritage List.

In the field of intangible heritage, cooperation with UNESCO focuses on the safeguarding of endangered languages.
