The Russian Federation joined UNESCO on April 21, 1954. Moscow hosts a UNESCO Office and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE), established in 1997. The Russian Federation boasts no less than 37 UNESCO Chairs, and 160 of its schools participate in the Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).

It also has two member institutions within the network of the UNESCO International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNEVOC).
