Uzbekistan has four cultural sites on the World Heritage List.
With the support of the UNESCO Office in Almaty, this country is working together with Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to inscribe the West Tien-Shan as a transboundary World Heritage site. Uzbekistan is also collaborating with other Central Asian States Parties and China in preparing a serial World Heritage nomination of the Silk Roads.
In the field of oral and intangible heritage, the Cultural Space of the Boysun District was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. Shashmaqom Music, also performed in Tajikistan, received the same distinction in 2003.
In the framework of the programme on Intercultural Dialogue in Central Asia, Uzbekistan is a member of the International Institute for Central Asian Studies, which aims to encourage intellectual cooperation between Member States of the region.
