In the framework of the Pacific 2009 Programme, Vanuatu receives support for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, which it ratified in 2002. National authorities have prepared a Tentative List of the sites they intend to recommend for inscription on the World Heritage List.

In 2003, the Vanuatu Sand Drawings received the designation of "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity". In order to preserve this unique know-how and encourage its transmission, a safeguard plan has been established. In the field of intangible heritage, Vanuatu and UNESCO also work together for the safeguarding of endangered languages.
