Joint projects between Armenia and UNESCO concern mainly the promotion of national and regional cultural heritage. The churches of Echmiatsin and the vestiges of the Zvartnots archaeological site, symbols of Armenian religious architecture, were inscribed in 2000 on the World Heritage List following an international renovation campaign initiated by UNESCO. The country is involved in developing intercultural dialogue in the Caucasus region.
In addition, UNESCO assists the country in the development of its communications technologies and its media. Several journalism training programmes organized at the Yerevan State University support the work of journalists living in post-conflict situations.
In July 2003, Ara Abramian, an internationally recognized advocate for human rights and peace and President of the World Armenian Congress, was designated UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Dialogue among Civilizations.
