Valdas Adamkus, the resident of Lithuania, was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Construction of Knowledge Societies in recognition of his contribution to social development, inter-university cooperation, water resource management, and environmental and heritage protection.
According to the Education For All Global Monitoring Report 2006, Lithuania has already achieved the gender parity goal in both primary and secondary education.
The country has four World Heritage sites and hosted the World Heritage Committee’s 30th session in 2006, during which a Baltic Youth Workshop on world heritage was held.
Lithuania is closely following UNESCO’s action in the field of bioethics. A Regional Bioethics Documentation Centre was opened in 2004 at the University of Vilnius. The Centre is cooperating with UNESCO in expanding the Global Ethics Observatory (GEObs), an extensive network of databases in the field of ethics.
