Slovakia joined UNESCO on 3 February 1993.

Since the creation in 2001 of a UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policy and Art Management, Slovakia has taken part in many projects aiming to consolidate national and regional cultural policy. There are five UNESCO Chairs in Slovakia.

On 22 August 2005, Slovakia hosted a round table on the International Convention against Doping in Sport, inaugurated by the Director-General of UNESCO and the European Union Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism.

The preservation and promotion of national culture are among the priorities of Slovakia’s collaboration with the Organization. During his 2005 visit to Slovakia, the Director-General visited Vlkolinec and Banska Stiavnica, which are both inscribed on the World Heritage List.

In the field of education, Slovakia continues to be an active member of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet), taking part in flagship projects such as the Blue Danube River and strengthening its collaboration with the Czech Republic and other neighbouring countries. It is also working on a national Education For All (EFA) programme.

In 2006 in Bratislava, the Slovak Commission for UNESCO hosted the Conference on Ethics and Bioethics in Science and Education as well as the Conference on Planet Earth, organized for students of ASP schools in Slovakia.
