Sweden joined UNESCO on January 23, 1950. In the field of education, the “Nordic Memorandum of Understanding” signed in 2003 between UNESCO and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden provides an umbrella for subsequent individual agreements that will depart from traditional extra-budgetary funding approaches towards Education for All.

This new approach is intended to be a comprehensive and collaborative effort in support of capacity- building for EFA. Around 30 Swedish schools are members of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network.
