In 2005, with financial support from the UK Department of Funding for International Development (DFID), UNESCO undertook the dissemination of a study on options and recommendations for budget support in Pakistan to the education sector.
Background
Given the growing importance of direct budget support as an aid modality and growing interest among donors in its likely impact, DFID and USAID commissioned this study to provide a technical analysis of the options available for direct budget support to the education sector in Pakistan.
What is Direct Budget Support?
DBS can be defined as the provision of donor funds to a recipient government using its own allocation, procurement and accounting systems and can be provided in the form of General Budget Support or Sector Budget Support.
Objective of the study
The dissemination of the study findings aimed to assist the Government of Pakistan and education development partners in appraising the benefits of DBS, understanding its modalities and selecting the most suitable modality to strengthen educational development, thus generating more harmonised aid to the education sector.
Dissemination of the study to a targeted audience by UNESCO on behalf of DFID
UNESCO oversaw all activities of the dissemination strategy such as development of an information kit, publication of the study, organization of roundtables, reporting to DFID, and providing other administrative support
