Chile has been a member of UNESCO since July 7, 1953, although it is important to add that the country was involved in the very creation of the Organization through the presence of poet and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriela Mistral at the London Conference in 1945 that gave birth to UNESCO.

Chile hosts the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, which supports the region’s countries in their decision on educational policy strategies.

As of September 2006, Chile has 88 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
